Day 02: City of San Jose – Sarapiqui

After a hearty breakfast in the morning, the adventure begins with a visit to the Hacienda Doka Coffee Plantation.

Doka Estate Coffee Tour

Expert guides will lead you through Hacienda Doka’s rich coffee heritage, starting at the seedbed where the journey of every coffee bean begins. Explore diverse plant varieties and their growth cycles and learn about the local history that has shaped our coffee culture.

Recognized as an Architectural Heritage for Humanity in 2003, our processing plant is where coffee cherries undergo their remarkable transformation. Witness traditional de-pulping and fermenting processes that are crucial to crafting our premium coffee.

The heart of our tour lies in the Hacienda Doka Coffee roasting plant. Here, you'll explore the art of roasting and learn about our variety of roasts.

Each blend tells a unique story, contributing to the distinct flavor and aroma of our coffee. Conclude your tour with a visit to our gift shop. Sample eight unique blends, each carefully crafted to represent the essence of Hacienda Doka’s coffee expertise.

After your Coffee Tour experience, head to the nearby La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Start with a delicious buffet lunch (included), then experience the scenic hike to the stunning waterfalls.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens

La Paz is a must-visit. This eco-park features stunning hiking trails, five breathtaking waterfalls, and a wildlife rescue center, showcasing the country’s largest privately-owned wildlife preserve, which includes wildcats like jaguars. Visitors can explore a remarkable butterfly garden, a frog pond, and enjoy interactions with hummingbirds and toucans. Nestled in the Central Highlands at elevations between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, the park's lush biodiversity includes cloud and rain forest habitats, filled with vibrant flora such as bromeliads and orchids.

After the waterfalls experience, continue for approximately 90 minutes down to Sarapiqui in the Atlantic lowlands.

Day 03: Sarapiqui

After breakfast, begin your adventure day, the first stop is La Selva Biological Station.

La Selva Biological Station

La Selva Biological Station, established in 1968 by Dr. Leslie Holdridge, is a vital nature reserve in the Atlantic lowlands, renowned for its impact on tropical ecology and its role as a premier training and research site for scientists. An expert naturalist guide will lead you through the rich natural history and significant facts of the area while you hike amid the lush, diverse rainforest surroundings. As the pioneer of private forest conservation in Costa Rica, La Selva comprises 1,600 hectares of diverse old-growth and recovering wet lowland tropical forest, connecting to Braulio Carrillo National Park. The station is home to an astounding variety of life, including over 2,077 plant species, 125 mammal species (72 bats), 470 bird species, 48 amphibians, 87 reptiles, and 45 freshwater fish. This rich biodiversity exists within a unique elevational gradient that spans from 35 meters above sea level to the Barva Volcano at 2,906 meters, making it one of the best-preserved areas in the tropics. La Selva's protected environment offers invaluable insights into how natural ecosystems adapt amidst the pressures of an expanding agricultural frontier and growing human population.

Start with a home-cooked welcome lunch served with fresh fruit.

This beautiful family-owned property, originally established 25 years ago by Williams and Krystal for butterfly cultivation, features a lush rainforest teeming with life. During the tour you’ll uncover with your guide the garden's mysteries and have a unique opportunity to see frogs, bats, toucans, hummingbirds, insects, and butterflies. You can explore various trails, observe a diverse array of local wildlife, and learn about sustainable butterfly farming from expert staff.

Day 04: Sarapiqui – Arenal Volcano

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and begin your adventure-filled day as you travel to the Arenal region. Your first stop is the Sarapiquí River, where you can choose between a relaxing floating trip or an exciting rafting experience.

Sarapiqui River Adventure

The Sarapiquí River, known for its crystal-clear waters, offers the perfect blend of adventure, nature, and fun. With sections suitable for all adventure levels, the river is ideal for beginners seeking a leisurely float and wildlife sightings, as well as more seasoned adventurers looking to experience the thrill of Class II-III rapids. Families with children can enjoy the gentler Class I rafting, while adrenaline-seekers can tackle the lively Class II-III sections, which strike a balance between excitement and tranquility.

Guides will point out various bird species, plants, and animals along the way, making it a great opportunity for wildlife observation—keep an eye out for toucans, sloths, and water birds. Midway through, there’ll be a stop to enjoy refreshing tropical fruits, including the renowned Sarapiquí pineapple. At the end of the trip, rafters can enjoy a picnic lunch and have access to showers at our riverside operations center. This scenic river adventure is led by experienced guides and supported by safety kayakers, ensuring an unforgettable adventure.

Best Chocolate Sarapiqui

At the end of the 18th century, Francisco Salicetti, great-grandfather of the current owner, established cacao plantations in Sarapiquí, founding the village of Chilamate. His visionary work set the foundation for the rich history of cacao in the region, which you can explore on this immersive two-hour tour. Start by walking through a 2-acre cacao plantation, learning about the plant’s growth, flowers, and pollination. Discover how chocolate was prepared by ancient cultures and how it has evolved over time. In the Cacao Rancho, located in the private Curare Reserve, expert naturalist guides will lead you through each stage of the chocolate-making process. After an adventurous day, EcoTermales Hot Springs in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, is ideal for relaxing in natural, mineral-rich pools warmed by the Arenal Volcano. Founded by the Hidalgo family two decades ago, this intimate hot springs complex was established to share their private sanctuary with visitors, offering a tranquil, nature-centered experience. The geothermally heated pools cascade like a river through the lush rainforest, starting at 105°F and cooling as they flow downstream, giving guests a variety of soothing options. Dedicated to sustainable tourism and preserving local wildlife, Eco Termales also provides opportunities to spot species like howler monkeys and toucans in the surrounding forest.

Guests begin at reception to receive locker keys and access dressing rooms with showers. A bar offers smoothies and cocktails (at an additional cost), and a Costa Rican buffet meal rounds out the relaxing experience.

Day 07: Arenal Volcano - Manuel Antonio

In the morning, after breakfast, start the scenic journey to the Central Pacific Coast.

Tarcoles River and Guacalillo Mangrove Boat Experience

Located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, Guacalillo Estuary and the Tárcoles River offer the opportunity to observe one of the largest colonies of American Crocodiles in the world. The region also boasts the richest mangrove forest in terms of biodiversity along the coast and serves as a vital conservation area for the Scarlet Macaw, one of the most iconic species in the country. With its bright red, orange, blue, and yellow plumage, long tail, and pointed wings, the Scarlet Macaw is easy to spot while flying above the boat or perched in the mangrove trees that line the estuary.

As the boat moves along the mangrove, visitors can explore an impressive ecosystem made up of four mangrove species that provide a critical nesting and sheltering area for mammals, reptiles, and species like iguanas and basilisks. Birdwatchers will have the chance to spot a wide variety of waterfowl, including the boat-billed heron, roseate spoonbills, and raptors such as the crested caracara and mangrove hawk. At the end of this remarkable journey, a delicious lunch is included to round out the experience

Following lunch, continue for a two-hour drive to the Manuel Antonio National Park region.

Day 08: Manuel Antonio

Free morning to relax at the hotel, take advantage of the hotel facilities or visit the nearby Biezans Beach or to Manuel Antonio Beach where Hotel Parador offers a free shuttle.

Biezans Beach in Manuel Antonio is a hidden gem, offering a peaceful escape from the more crowded tourist spots. This small yet charming beach is perfect for those seeking tranquility, with calm, crystal-clear turquoise waters inviting a refreshing dip in their warm embrace. The serene surroundings make it an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature at its finest. Access to the beach is via a natural trail, so closed shoes are recommended. Since the beach is isolated, there are no showers or toilets available.

For a more active experience, local vendors offer kayaks and snorkeling gear to explore the vibrant marine life along Costa Rica’s coast. Visitors can also purchase sodas, beers, and snacks while lounging on comfortable beach chairs, enjoying the view. These services are not included on the package. It’s recommended to bring petty cash, as vendors are informal merchants and do not have access to modern payment methods.

Around noon, it's time to begin your catamaran and snorkeling adventure.

Please note that dinner is included at the end of the tour, so we recommend having lunch (not included) beforehand to fully enjoy your experience.
