Day 01: Arrival in San Jose, Costa Rica

After passing through Immigration and Customs, please proceed to meet your EDT Representative, who will be warmly awaiting you with a sign displaying your name. Our team is here to ensure you feel welcome and at ease from the moment you arrive. Your representative is ready to assist you with any questions, guide you to your next steps, and ensure a smooth start to your adventure.

This adventure-packed day start with your adventure rafting!

Pacuare River Rafting
The Pacuare River is one of the best choices for your adventure treks in Costa Rica. Pacuare is world famous for its sheer beauty. The white water that is equally exciting.

Upon arrival to the river we will gear you up with a life jacket, helmet and paddle and then brief you with a full safety orientation talk. Finally, it is time to take off down the rapids!

The first 4 miles consist of fun class II-III rapids which is a perfect time to test your new river skills and gain confidence in your team. Here you can find pockets of secondary growth forest that is extremely beautiful. After about 40 minutes we will enter the famous Pacuare River Gorge, which is 5 miles of some of the best white water Costa Rica has to offer. The rapids here are “Terciopelo snake”, “Double drop”, “Upper and Lower Huacas”, “Pin ball” toname a few. You will also see the Huacas watefall, a 150 foot dramatic drop into the river.

After the gorge the rivers opens up to a 5 mile stretch on the Valle del Pacuare, where the river has a different character. It is wide open, which gives you the opportunity to rest a bit and take the opportunity to do some wildlife spotting. The main rapids here are “Cimarrones”, “The Play Hole”, “El Indio” and “Magnetic Rock”. The forest remains just as lush, and the rapids just as fun.

Lunch will be served during a break at one of the riverbanks.

At the end of the tour, there will be a stop at the rafting operator’s headquarters, where you can change into dry clothes.

Next, meet your driver for a two-hour journey to the Caño Blanco pier. From there, you’ll board a private boat to travel to Tortuguero.

You can expect to arrive in Tortuguero in the late afternoon.

Notes: The Turtle Nesting Tour (between July and October) and the Early Morning Boat Tour are not included.

Tortuguero National Park Morning Boat Tour
The tour inside the canals of the National Park is the most important activity of your trip to Tortuguero.

You’ll enjoy the lush biodiversity of flora and fauna in this ecosystem which is the most complex and dynamic of Tropical America.

Accompanied by your naturalist guide and an experienced boatman in the area, you will appreciate the amazing variety of animal species the National Park shelter. Three species of monkeys, 400 species of birds, reptiles and amphibians, such as iguanas, American Crocodiles, caimans, turtles… And a large number of mammals.

The boat tour is in the mornings, the duration of the tour is two hours approximately.

Cerro Tortuguero Hiking
This is a challenging yet rewarding adventure for those seeking to explore Tortuguero National Park’s natural beauty. This moderately difficult hike involves steep inclines and uneven terrain, making it ideal for active travelers. As you ascend the extinct volcanic hill, the park’s highest point, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the canals, rainforest, and Caribbean coastline. Along the way, your expert guide will provide fascinating insights into the region’s ecosystem and its conservation significance. This tour is perfect for nature enthusiasts ready to embrace a physical challenge in a stunning tropical setting.

Kayaking Caño Palma
In the afternoon you can join one of the options tours offered at the lodge and that EDT has included as a part of your itinerary, you can choose between the Canoeing or the Kayaking at Caño Palma.

Kayaking or Canoeing through the Caño Palma Canal in Tortuguero is a unique, immersive experience that takes you deep into the natural wonders of Costa Rica. This narrow canal, shaded by dense palms, is known for its dark, tannin-rich waters that flow under a canopy of tropical vegetation. It’s an ideal route offering many opportunities for spotting abundant birdlife, including herons, egrets, and other aquatic species. The peaceful pace of paddling allows visitors to observe wildlife up close, often catching glimpses of monkeys, sloths, and caimans along the shores.

Start your day with an early breakfast, then board the boat for a scenic journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes back to the local pier. Upon arrival, you’ll be comfortably transferred to the town of Guápiles, where a delicious lunch awaits. 

After lunch, continue your journey for about 2 hours to the stunning Arenal Volcano region. 

Expect to arrive in Arenal in the late afternoon.

Waterfall Rappelling and ATV Adventure
Operated by professional and certified guides since 2001, this half-day canyoning tour will take you deep inside the Pure Trek canyon to experience a series of waterfall rappels, and activities like rock climbing and the “Monkey Drop” – you will get wet!

Keep your eyes open for a chance to see toucans, sloths, monkeys and other wildlife.

After visiting the lookout points, you will enjoy and explore the Maleku´s Villa; an indigenous culture in the private village, in the middle of the jungle, including a demonstration of their culture and interaction with them.

After an adventurous day, EcoTermales Hot Springs in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, is ideal for relaxing in natural, mineral-rich pools warmed by the Arenal Volcano. Founded by the Hidalgo family two decades ago, this intimate hot springs complex was established to share their private sanctuary with visitors, offering a tranquil, nature-centered experience. The geothermally heated pools cascade like a river through the lush rainforest, starting at 105°F and cooling as they flow downstream, giving guests a variety of soothing options. Dedicated to sustainable tourism and preserving local wildlife, Eco Termales also provides opportunities to spot species like howler monkeys and toucans in the surrounding forest.

Guests begin at reception to receive locker keys and access dressing rooms with showers. A bar offers smoothies and cocktails (at an additional cost), and a Costa Rican buffet meal rounds out the relaxing experience.

Start with a casual lunch with burritos, fruits and water.

Our outriggers (Hawaiian style canoes) are great equalizers of abilities. Your steersperson in the canoe takes care of controlling your direction and everyone gets to the most beautiful beaches around at the same time. The canoes are more efficient than kayaks and paddling is a little easier. You will glide past spectacular cliffs filled with frigate birds and pelicans and your guide will point out interesting landmarks.
We snorkel (when conditions permit) from the beach so we have lots of options if someone in the group is into monkey and bird watching or beachcombing.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, international airlines require passengers to arrive at least 2 hours before their flight’s departure.
